Players Classic: The UK's Finest?
How do you make a top quality event even better? Well, you can increase the quality of cars on display, you can bring bigger sponsors on board, you can go from a one-day show to a weekender, or if you’re Players, you can do all three. Welcome to our coverage of the UK’s best modified car show, Players Classic 2018.
Eclectic Modified Mix.
Put plain and simple, the Players Classic show has something for everyone. The Players events have become a big part of the modified car scene in the last 10+ years. Jamie McToldridge and Carl Taylor have continued to create a platform with which car culture can thrive via their events. Alongside their Players Essex instalment, they have a seriously solid show "portfolio".
Function & Form.
Whether you like your cars like ornaments or prefer out-and-out racers, you'll find it at Players Classic. What this event does is bring together the most eclectic mix of styles to the hugely historic Goodwood Motor circuit in West Sussex, England.
Goodwood Motor Circuit.
Opened in 1948, this 3.8km (2.4m) circuit started life as the perimeter track at RAF Westhampnett, which was opened as a relief airfield to RAF Tangmere during the Second World War. The first race meeting in September 1948 marked the start of a long history of motorsport which has seen all of the racing greats battle for supremacy on this 7 corner “short circuit”. From Sterling Moss to Jim Clark, Goodwood has played host to some incredible talent over the years.
Of course, what Players Classic really does is throw away the traditional Goodwood rulebook, because this event isn't anything like Goodwood's Festival or Speed (FOS), Goodwood Revival or Breakfast Club Meets, because well, this is an event for the masses, very much like the Retro Rides Goodwood event, which we covered here.
The Cream Rises to the Top.
In typical Players Classic fashion, you'll find a huge variety of high quality cars on display and of course, on the track too. Every year this show serves up a fresh mix to suit everyone and keeps on raising the bar.
Whether you want to book track time for your E46 M3, or apply to show your air-bagged 190E in the paddocks, you still don't have to be a millionaire car collector at this Goodwood event, this is grass roots.
Now a two-day event, Players Classic is split down the middle. Saturday is track day plus show cars and Sunday is a pure show car day. If you like a bit of everything, like us, then you will love the new two-day show format. Watching owners put their cars through their paces on track means a show with plenty to see.
Show & Track.
What makes Players Classic so damn good is how accessible prestigious Goodwood now is as a result. Everyone can enjoy this high end venue and racetrack. Let's take a look around…
